HBO’s Harry Potter TV Series Cast Revealed

UK fans, the wizarding world is back! HBO’s Harry Potter TV series, set to reimagine J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, has unveiled its magical cast. Young newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stabler will star as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, joined by stars like Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Get ready for Hogwarts’ 2026 return!

Meet the New Hogwarts Trio

On May 1, 2025, HBO announced the casting of its iconic trio after a global open call drew over 11,000 auditions. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod praised the “exceptional talent” of these young actors, saying, “We cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen”.

  • Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter: Scottish newcomer Dominic steps into Daniel Radcliffe’s shoes as the Boy Who Lived. Known for his role in the upcoming Sky comedy Grow alongside Nick Frost, he’s also set for BBC’s Gifted, filmed in Edinburgh.

  • Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger: English actress Arabella, 11, inherits Emma Watson’s role as the brilliant witch. A West End star, she led Matilda: The Musical (2023–2024) and narrated Starlight Express. Her “bushy-haired” Hermione vibe, noting her stage charisma.

  • Alastair Stabler as Ron Weasley: Alastair, a screen newcomer with red hair reminiscent of Rupert Grint, makes his major debut as Harry’s loyal friend. With no prior acting credits beyond a TV advert, his casting is a “perfect match”.

Star-Studded Supporting Cast

The young trio joins a stellar lineup, bringing Hogwarts to life:

  • Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid: The Shaun of the Dead star plays the lovable groundskeeper, succeeding Robbie Coltrane.

  • Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell: Fresh from playing Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Thallon takes on the stuttering Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, a role originated by Ian Hart.

  • Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch: The Fast Show comedian brings humor to the grumpy caretaker, previously played by David Bradley.

  • Additional Stars: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape round out the faculty.

What to Expect from the Series

The Harry Potter series, greenlit in April 2023, will adapt all seven books across seven seasons, with production starting summer 2025 for a 2026 debut on HBO Max. Each season will dive deeper into Rowling’s world, exploring subplots omitted from the films, like Peeves or Ron’s Quidditch arc. Executive produced by Rowling, Gardiner, and Mylod, it promises a “faithful adaptation” with fresh faces.

Get Ready for Hogwarts in 2026!

The series won’t hit screens until 2026, but UK fans can revisit the wizarding world now:

  • Stream the Classics: Stream the original Harry Potter films on Netflix or Prime Video to relive the magic.

  • Stay Updated: Follow TGI Movie for casting updates, like potential roles for Sirius Black or Draco Malfoy.
