Heads of State Film Review
When a Prime Minister Meets a Movie Star President: Heads of State Delivers Streaming-Ready Fun
Released straight to streaming on Prime Video on 2 July 2025, Heads of State skips the cinema and lands right in your living room—perfect for a relaxed summer movie night.
The film stars Idris Elba as the no-nonsense British Prime Minister Sam Clarke and John Cena as the charismatic (and slightly clueless) U.S. President Will Derringer. Cena’s character is a former action movie star turned politician—much to Elba’s disapproval. The two leaders can’t stand each other, but when danger strikes, they’re forced to put aside their differences and team up for a high-stakes mission.
The plot itself is nothing groundbreaking—it follows the classic odd-couple action-comedy formula—but the clash of personalities carries the film. Elba plays the straight man with his usual gravitas, while Cena leans into his goofy charm, relying more on charm than any real grasp of politics. Together, they battle Russian terrorists while trading jabs, dodging bullets, and navigating the cultural quirks between the UK and the US.
Some of the action sequences are surprisingly well choreographed, and the script delivers a few solid laughs—especially when poking fun at international politics and national stereotypes. Sure, it follows a familiar template, but if you go in expecting a light, fast-paced buddy comedy rather than a serious thriller, you’ll likely enjoy the ride.
Heads of State might not reinvent the genre, but as a streaming action-comedy, it hits the mark. It’s a fun, easy watch with two big personalities at the centre—perfect for when you want some light-hearted entertainment without leaving the couch.
