The Old Guard 2 Film Review: Another Disappointing Sequel
Here we go again with another movie that gets worse with each sequel. I already found the first one pretty mediocre and unremarkable, typical of Netflix's style, relying on the allure of big stars. The premise wasn't outstanding, and the cinematography wasn't particularly good either.
This latest film is even more boring than the last. It's supposedly an action movie, but the action is so simplistic that there are no memorable fight scenes whatsoever. The story is even more bizarre. Teammates who've known each other for a thousand years weirdly betrayed each other in the last film, and now, they're flipping sides again, helping each other out? What the ****?
The protagonist Andy (Charlize Theron) was initially portrayed as so powerful, having regained her immortality, yet she couldn't defeat someone who was trembling and had lost their own immortality. It's clearly just setting up for a third movie. Honestly, Netflix, I really think you should just end it here.
Once again, Netflix has left me disappointed. Out of all the movies they've made, there truly isn't one that I'd consider genuinely good.
I'd give it a 3/10. Only watch this if you're incredibly bored with nothing else to do, or if you have a particular crush for Charlize Theron.
Synopsis
Andy (Charlize Theron) and her team of immortal warriors are back, with a renewed sense of purpose in their mission to protect the world. With Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) still in exile after his betrayal, and Quynh (Veronica Ngô) out for revenge after escaping her underwater prison, Andy grapples with her newfound mortality as a mysterious threat emerges that could jeopardize everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years. Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli) and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) enlist the help of Tuah (Henry Golding), an old friend who may provide the key to unlocking the mystery behind immortal existence. Directed by Victoria Mahoney, and also starring Uma Thurman, The Old Guard 2 is an emotional, adrenaline-pumping sequel, based on the world created by Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernandez.
