Amistad

Synopsis

In 1839, aboard the Spanish slave ship La Amistad, a group of abducted Mende captives led by Sengbe Pieh, also known as Cinque, stage a courageous revolt to reclaim their freedom. After seizing control of the vessel, they attempt to sail back to Africa, but the ship is intercepted off the American coast by the United States Navy. Taken into custody, the Africans are jailed and forced to navigate a harrowing legal ordeal as multiple parties, including Spanish slave traders, American naval officers, and the Queen of Spain, claim legal ownership over them. A passionate defense attorney named Roger Sherman Baldwin, alongside abolitionist Theodore Joadson, takes up their cause, contending that the captives were illegally kidnapped free men rather than lawful property. As the fierce legal battle escalates all the way to the United States Supreme Court, former President John Quincy Adams steps forward to champion human rights, individual freedom, and the rule of law against overwhelming political and social pressures.
