Synopsis

In a desolate, surreal world shrouded in eternal twilight and shadows, a young girl wanders through a gothic, abandoned cityscape. She carries with her a large, mysterious egg, protecting it with unwavering devotion under her dress. Her solitary existence is interrupted when she encounters a nameless man carrying a cross-shaped staff who follows her through the labyrinthine ruins. As they navigate a landscape filled with enigmatic statues, fossilized remains, and phantom fishermen chasing the shadows of long-dead fish, a profound and silent dialogue on faith, existence, and the nature of hope unfolds. Directed by Mamoru Oshii with character designs by Yoshitaka Amano, this avant-garde masterpiece is a visual poem that eschews traditional narrative in favor of haunting, atmospheric symbolism.
