Battle Royale
バトル・ロワイアル
Synopsis
In a dystopian, near-future Japan, a collapsed economy and widespread teenage rebellion force the totalitarian government to pass the radical Millennium Educational Reform Act, known as the BR Act. Under this legislation, a randomly selected class of ninth-grade students from Shiroiwa Junior High School is gasattacked during a school trip and taken to a deserted, isolated island. There, they are fitted with explosive tracking collars and confronted by their former teacher, Kitano, who introduces the rules of a brutal, government-sponsored game of survival: they have three days to slaughter each other until only one survivor remains. Armed with maps, rations, and an assortment of random items ranging from lethal shotguns to useless pot lids, the classmates must decide whether to trust their long-time friends or kill them to survive. This visceral, highly influential cult classic directed by Kinji Fukasaku explores themes of betrayal, youth isolation, and the basic instincts of human survival under ultimate societal duress.
