Beautiful Thing
Synopsis
Jamie Gangel is an introverted teenager struggling to fit in on a working-class council estate in Thamesmead, South East London. Constantly bullied at school and living with his fiercely independent, barmaid single mother Sandra, Jamie finds himself secretly infatuated with his classmate and next-door neighbour, Ste Pearce. Ste's home life is a nightmare of abuse inflicted by his alcoholic father and drug-dealing brother. After a particularly brutal beating, Sandra takes pity on Ste and lets him sleep over at their flat, leading the two boys to share a bed. Over the course of a hot summer, an unexpected tenderness develops between them, shifting from tentative companionship to a profound romantic awakening. Surrounded by their chaotic neighborhood—including their eccentric, Cass Elliot-obsessed neighbor Leah—the boys must navigate the societal pressures, homophobia, and emotional hurdles of coming out. Hettie MacDonald's groundbreaking urban fairytale captures a touching, optimistic portrayal of young queer love, culminating in a beautiful, defiant affirmation of identity.
