Being Heumann
Synopsis
Based on true events, this biographical drama follows revolutionary disability rights activist Judy Heumann as she spearheads one of the most pivotal civil rights movements in American history. Denied access to public education as a child in Brooklyn due to using a wheelchair, Judy grows into a fierce and uncompromising advocate. In 1977, frustrated by the federal government's refusal to enforce Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, she leads a passionate and diverse group of disability rights activists to occupy the San Francisco federal building. Armed with unyielding determination, sharp wit, and solidarity across social movements, Judy and her fellow protesters engage in an unprecedented 25-day sit-in, defying authority and enduring immense hardships to force government officials into enacting landmark legislation that transforms millions of lives.
