Synopsis

Set during the twilight of the Sui Dynasty, the film follows Dao Ma, a formidable mercenary and the empire's second most-wanted fugitive. Indebted to a tribal leader, Dao Ma accepts a perilous mission to escort a mysterious, masked scholar named Zhi Shilang to the capital city of Chang'an. Unknown to him, his charge is actually the empire's most-wanted criminal, carrying secrets that could topple the oppressive rule of Emperor Yang Guang. As they trek across the unforgiving, sand-swept landscapes of the Western Regions, they are relentlessly pursued by government assassins, rival bounty hunters, and the vengeful swordsman Diting. Directed by legendary action filmmaker Yuen Woo-ping, this gritty wuxia epic blends high-stakes political conspiracy with grounded, visceral martial arts combat. Along the journey, Dao Ma must protect a young child under his care while navigating a world where the lines between hero and outlaw are blurred by the dust of the desert and the blood of the fallen.
