Synopsis

Based on an outrageous true story, California Schemin' follows two aspiring Scottish MCs, Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, who are tired of being laughed out of the UK hip-hop scene because of their thick Dundee accents. In a desperate bid for stardom, they reinvent themselves as Silibil N' Brains, an established rap duo from California with fake backstories and meticulously practiced American accents. The audacious con works perfectly, hoodwinking the London music industry into offering them a lucrative record deal and a whirlwind of MTV appearances. However, as they ascend to the heights of the charts and share stages with icons like Eminem, the pressure of maintaining their elaborate façade begins to tear at the seams of their friendship. Directed by James McAvoy in his feature debut, the film is a high-energy, bittersweet exploration of identity, the obsession with street cred, and the extraordinary lengths two friends will go to for a shot at the limelight.
