Synopsis
Set against the stark background of the Cold War in 1950s Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia, and Paris, this sweeping romantic drama follows the tumultuous love story of Wiktor, a gifted musician, and Zula, a spirited young singer. They first meet in the ruins of post-war Poland, where Wiktor is recruiting talent for a state-sponsored folk ensemble. Despite their vastly different backgrounds and temperaments, they are drawn into a passionate, decade-spanning affair that is constantly tested by shifting political ideologies, exile, and the personal demons that haunt them both. Captured in stunning black-and-white, the film explores the impossibility of love in an era defined by surveillance and borders. As they defect, return, and cross paths across a divided Europe, Wiktor and Zula remain fatally mismatched yet condemned to each other, ultimately proving that some hearts cannot be contained by iron curtains or social constraints.
