Synopsis

After surviving a near-fatal head-on collision, film producer James Ballard (James Spader) and his wife Catherine (Deborah Kara Unger) find their stagnant marriage jolted back to life by the visceral adrenaline of the accident. Their search for a new kind of intensity leads them into a shadowy underground subculture of "car-crash fetishists."

The couple becomes enthralled by Vaughan (Elias Koteas), a charismatic and scarred "scientist" who orchestrates reenactments of famous celebrity car accidents. As the group’s obsession deepens, they begin to view the mangled metal of automobile wrecks as a site of ultimate physical and spiritual liberation—a dangerous journey where the line between the human body and the machine completely disappears.
