Synopsis
Yusuke Kafuku, an aging theater director and actor, is devastated by the sudden death of his beloved wife, Oto, who left behind a complex web of secrets. Two years later, Kafuku accepts an invitation to direct a production of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya at a theater festival in Hiroshima. Bound by festival rules, he is assigned a quiet, unassuming young woman named Misaki Watari to serve as his personal chauffeur for his cherished red Saab 900. Initially reluctant to share his private space, Kafuku gradually begins to bond with Misaki during their long daily commutes. As the rehearsals progress and tension rises among the multi-lingual cast, including a volatile young actor who shared a secret past with Oto, Kafuku and Misaki confront their painful, repressed histories. Through shared silence and heartfelt conversations on the road, they embark on a delicate journey toward grief, forgiveness, and self-acceptance. Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Oscar-winning masterpiece offers a profound, beautifully paced exploration of human connection.
