Synopsis
Set against the backdrop of San Francisco's vibrant cultural evolution in the 1970s and 1980s, Fairyland is a moving coming-of-age story centered on the bond between young Alysia and her father, Steve. Following the sudden death of her mother, Alysia is uprooted by Steve as he seeks a fresh start in a city flourishing with newfound freedom. As Steve openly explores his identity as a gay man and develops his life as a writer, his bohemian lifestyle frequently clashes with the traditional expectations of parenthood. The film poignantly chronicles their relationship as it shifts from an era of artistic decadence and liberation to the heartbreaking arrival of the AIDS crisis. Based on Alysia Abbott's acclaimed memoir and produced by Sofia Coppola, this intimate drama explores the complexities of family, the legacy of loss, and the enduring power of love within a unique and changing landscape.
