Synopsis
The movie "Fragments of Ice" is a documentary by Ukrainian director Maria Stoianova. The film is built around a collection of VHS home videos shot by her father, a champion figure skater with the Ukrainian "Ballet on Ice" in the 1980s and 90s. The footage captures his tours to the West, offering a stark contrast between the glamorous, free-wheeling world he experienced abroad and the quiet, often-challenging reality of life back home in Soviet and post-Soviet Ukraine. Through this deeply personal archive, the film explores themes of family, national identity, and the dramatic historical shifts of a nation caught between two worlds. It's a poignant reflection on memory, history, and the way a past seemingly "frozen in ice" can powerfully re-emerge in the present day.
