Girlfriends
女孩不平凡
Synopsis
Tsui Lok Yan, a 34-year-old independent filmmaker from Macao living in Hong Kong, finds herself at a critical crossroads. Faced with an artistic creative block, financial strain, and personal pressure from her girlfriend Bei to settle down into a traditional routine, Lok begins to unravel. To process her internal turmoil and the weight of adult expectations, she reflects deeply on the defining romantic relationships of her past. She revisits herself at age 22 as 'Choi'—a headstrong university student in Taiwan navigating a passionate but turbulent connection with her older partner. She also reflects further back to age 17 as 'Yan'—a naive teenager in Macao experiencing the bittersweet sting of her very first unrequited love. Directed by Tracy Choi, this lyrical and semi-autobiographical LGBTQ+ drama chronicles a woman's emotional maturation across three distinct eras of her life. Blending nostalgia with a poignant search for identity, the film captures the delicate complexities of modern queer relationships and the universal journey toward self-acceptance.
