Synopsis
In the early 19th century, Baron de Caus, a refined and worldly nobleman, returns to his ancestral Bohemian estate with a secret: he is a Hastrman, a mythical water spirit capable of manipulating the elements but burdened by a cold, inhuman nature. While revitalizing his ponds and lands, he becomes deeply infatuated with Katynka, the spirited and beautiful daughter of a local wealthy farmer. Katynka’s rebellion against traditional village life and her magnetic vitality awaken an agonizing human passion within the Baron, forcing a conflict between his elemental nature and his newfound desire for love. As folk rituals and pagan traditions clash with the rigid morality of the local priest, the Baron’s obsession grows increasingly dangerous. This visually stunning gothic drama blends elements of folklore, romance, and environmental allegory, exploring the thin line between the civilizing influence of the Enlightenment and the raw, untamable power of the natural world. It is a haunting tale of a creature trapped between two worlds, seeking a soul he can never truly possess.
