Synopsis
Ricky Baker is a defiant, hip-hop-loving city kid who is placed with a loving aunt, Bella, and her cantankerous husband, Hec, in the remote New Zealand countryside. Just as Ricky begins to settle into his new home, tragedy strikes, threatening to send him back into the foster care system. Refusing to go back, Ricky runs away into the vast, wild New Zealand bush, with a reluctant Hec hot on his trail. After a series of misunderstandings, the authorities believe that Hec has kidnapped the boy, sparking a massive, nationwide manhunt. Outnumbered and out of their depth, the mismatched duo must put aside their glaring differences and cooperate to survive the elements and outrun the law. Directed by Taika Waititi, this heartwarming adventure comedy is a story of found family, resilience, and reclaiming freedom.
