Synopsis

Based on the celebrated autobiographical novel by Amélie Nothomb, this whimsical and philosophical drama follows the first three years of a Belgian diplomat’s daughter born in Japan. Young Amélie begins her life believing she is an omnipotent, unmoving deity—a "tube" indifferent to the universe—until the vibrant culture of Japan and the sensory wonders of the world awaken her consciousness. Through the eyes of a precocious child, the film explores the discovery of language, the devotion of a beloved nanny, and the beautiful, sometimes turbulent transition from a "god" to a human being.
