Synopsis
Following a tragic car crash that claims her boyfriend's life, young Berlin piano student Laura miraculously survives with barely a scratch. Shaken and grieving, she is taken in by Betty, a mysterious middle-aged woman who witnessed the accident and lives in an isolated house in the German countryside. As Laura recovers under Betty's tender, almost motherly care, the arrival of Betty's estranged husband and son complicates the idyllic sanctuary. Christian Petzold's haunting psychodrama, named after the third movement of Maurice Ravel's piano suite, unfolds like a melancholic fairy tale where the boundaries between past and present blur. Amidst meaningful silences and the echoes of classical music, Laura must navigate a web of family secrets and her own unhealed trauma to find a sense of belonging in a world that feels increasingly like a fever dream.
