Synopsis
In the chaotic aftermath of the 1973 military coup in Chile, young American writer Charles Horman (John Shea) suddenly vanishes from the streets of Santiago. His conservative, businessman father, Ed Horman (Jack Lemmon), flies in from New York, initially convinced that his son’s "radical" politics are to blame and that the U.S. Embassy will swiftly secure his release.
Ed joins forces with his daughter-in-law, Beth (Sissy Spacek), with whom he has a fractured and ideological relationship. As they navigate a city under martial law—where bodies line the morgues and gunshots echo through the night—they are met with a wall of bureaucratic "dead ends" and oily reassurances from American officials. Ed’s staunch patriotism begins to crumble as he uncovers a terrifying truth: his own government may not only know exactly what happened to his son but may have been complicit in his fate.
