Synopsis

Set in the eccentric world of Australian competitive ballroom dancing, Strictly Ballroom follows Scott Hastings, a champion-caliber dancer who risks his career by performing unorthodox, non-regulation steps. When his maverick style causes his regular partner to desert him just weeks before the prestigious Pan-Pacific Grand Prix Championships, Scott is left without a partner and at odds with the powerful Ballroom Confederation. He finds an unlikely ally in Fran, a shy 'ugly duckling' beginner who has the audacity to ask to dance 'his way.' Together, they defy the rigid establishment and Scott's overbearing mother to prove that a life lived in fear is a life half-lived. This vibrant, colorful directorial debut by Baz Luhrmann blends comedy, romance, and dazzling choreography, ultimately celebrating the triumph of individual expression over stifling tradition.
