Synopsis
In the repressive atmosphere of 1950s post-war London, Hester Collyer, the elegant wife of high-court judge Sir William Collyer, leads a life of comfort but total emotional stagnation. Her world is upended when she falls into a self-destructive, passionate affair with Freddie Page, a former RAF pilot haunted by his wartime experiences. Driven by an overwhelming erotic desire that her husband cannot fulfill, Hester abandons her social standing and luxury to move into a dingy boarding house with the volatile Freddie. As the reality of her new life sets in, Hester finds herself caught between the 'devil' of her reckless lover and the 'deep blue sea' of her chilly but stable marriage. The film begins with her failed suicide attempt and unfolds through a series of poignant flashbacks, exploring the boundaries of passion, the pain of unrequited love, and the social constraints that trap a woman seeking true intimacy in a world rebuilding itself from the ruins of war.
